50 Is the New 65: Older Americans Are Getting Booted from Their Jobs—and Denied New Opportunities

In the end, we want an economy that allows everyone to work who is able to do so, and provides a robust social safety net for those who can’t. Our current system is unsustainable, and age discrimination, which strikes even those who are still in their prime, is quickly becoming an economic, social and public health disaster for the 21st century.

2013 as Year Zero: For Earth and For Us

Think of 2013 as the Year Zero in the battle over climate change, one in which we are going to have to win big, or lose bigger. This is a terrible thing to say, but not as terrible as the reality that you can see in footage of glaciers vanishing, images of the entire surface of the Greenland Ice Shield melting this summer, maps of Europe’s future in which just being in southern Europe when the heat hits will be catastrophic, let alone in more equatorial realms.

Remember the Ladies: Isabella Bird Bishop

For the remainder of her life, she traveled and wrote about her travels, and got famous for that. While traveling she felt strong, while at home, she felt ill. She traveled to India, Afghanistan and Persia, Canada, Japan, Korea and China. At 68 she made a 1,000 mile trip on horseback through Morocco. That’s my kind of gal!
