In a post on their blog, the New Oxford American Dictionary chose “unfriend” as the 2009 Word of the Year. The word is defined as the act of “remov[ing] someone as a ‘friend’ on a social networking site such as Facebook.”According to one of the dictionary’s senior lexicographer, the word was selected for its “currency and potential longevity.” “It assumes a verb sense of “friend” that is really not used (at least not since maybe the 17th century!),” Christine Lindberg observed.”Unfriend” beat out “sexting,” “funemployed,” “deleb,”(a dead celeb) ” teabagger,” and “hashtag” for the distinction.
